Hazardous Waste Disposal Guidance

At Green City Recycling, we aim to provide a reliable and responsible waste removal service across the South East. However, there are certain types of hazardous waste that we cannot collect. These materials require specialist handling, transport and disposal under strict regulations.

This page explains what hazardous waste includes, why it cannot be collected as part of our standard services, and where you can safely dispose of it.

What Is Hazardous Waste?

Hazardous waste refers to materials that are harmful to human health, the environment or both. These items often require specialist treatment due to their chemical, biological or toxic properties.

Common examples include:

  • Asbestos
  • Car oil and fuels
  • Chemical waste and solvents
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Medical or clinical waste
  • Paints and liquids (unless fully dried or empty)
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
  • Aerosols and pressurised containers
  • Corrosive or hazardous liquids

These items are not accepted as part of our waste collection services, as outlined in our general service information.

Why We Cannot Collect Hazardous Waste

Hazardous materials must be handled by licensed specialists with the correct equipment, containment systems and disposal routes. This ensures that harmful substances do not pose a risk during transport or processing.

As a licensed waste carrier, we follow all relevant regulations and guidelines. Our focus is on collecting general, construction and household waste safely, as detailed on our services page. Accepting hazardous waste without the correct processes would not meet legal or environmental standards.

Safe Alternatives for Hazardous Waste Disposal

If you need to dispose of hazardous materials, there are safe and compliant options available:

  • Local council recycling centres often accept certain hazardous items such as paint, chemicals and fluorescent tubes
  • Specialist hazardous waste contractors can collect and dispose of materials like asbestos, oils and clinical waste
  • Retail take back schemes may be available for items like batteries, bulbs and some chemicals

We recommend checking with your local authority for guidance on approved disposal sites in your area.

What We Can Collect Instead

While we cannot collect hazardous waste, we can remove a wide range of non hazardous materials quickly and responsibly. This includes:

  • Household waste and bulky items
  • Furniture and appliances
  • Builders and renovation waste
  • Garden waste and outdoor materials
  • General rubbish and unwanted items

For full property or site clearances, visit our clearances, domestic and commercial pages.

Electrical Waste and Special Items

Some items that may appear hazardous, such as fridges, televisions and electrical equipment, can still be collected through our compliant WEEE recycling service. These are handled separately to ensure they meet legal disposal requirements.

Our Commitment to Responsible Waste Management

We are committed to ensuring all waste we collect is handled responsibly, with a strong focus on recycling and landfill reduction. You can read more about our environmental approach on our about us page.

By clearly separating hazardous and non hazardous waste streams, we help ensure that all materials are processed safely and in line with regulations.
